Talking About Support in Learning and Language

How does your school structure support? In this Job Alike, we’ll share current approaches to both learning and language support in our schools, ranging from formal “pull-out” classes in learning support or ELL, to a variety of “push-in” scenarios with modifications or extra teacher help. _x000D_ If possible, please come to the session with either a USB file or copies to share of your one-paragraph description of the size and make-up of your student population, the learning and language support needs seen most often, and any classes or strategies with which your school tries to meet them. Discuss any assessments used like (MAP). Finally, if you could create a tailor-made program for your school, what would it look like?

A NEW KIND OF LITERACY: Innovative School Library Programs Promote Classroom Achievements

Traditional style libraries are in the process of leveling the playing field, they are connecting all the knowledge pools in the world together. Librarians, today, have found themselves moving away from managing a physical space into a ubiquitous computing environment. They are virtually guiding student knowledge pools and teaching an evaluation process. Librarians, must continually build their own awareness of tools and resources to teach the critical skills needed by the ‘Net Generation,' or multitasking students. This study examines student's ability to effectively use a library and the effects good library skills have on student achievements.

Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Program

Children learn best when actively participating in learning activities that fit their individual abilities. We know that children of the same age can often be at different places in their development - some are more advanced while others lag behind. This can be true not only in their cognitive development but in their social/emotional or physical development as well. The teacher must provide activities which allow children of all developmental levels to participate in an active and productive way. This workshop will focus on ways this can be accomplished in the classroom.

Grazing the Net: Raising a Generation of Free Range Students

The student sits at a classroom computer grazing Internet - a global network linking the student with vast databases, innumerable bulletin boards and millions of users. The potential is amazing. The information harvest could be impressive. Schools that can afford it are rushing to install WANs (wide area networks), LANs (local area networks) and Internet nodes so that all classrooms might sit down to sample the electronic feast. Access becomes priority - for some it becomes obsession. But shouldn't we be asking some important questions about this miracle? If highways are a mixed blessing - carrying some to grandmother's house for dinner but crashing others who have celebrated to the extreme - then what are the risks associated with the Net and how might we minimize them? How might we take advantage of the Net to raise a generation of free range students?

Introduction to the Writer\'s Workshop

Transform the way you teach writing in the classroom. The writing workshop model allows students to live like real writers as they are actively engaged in the writing process from pre-writing through publishing. This model can be tailored to students of all writing levels. In addition, you will learn specific strategies on teaching a personal narrative unit and you will have a chance to look at actual students’ drafts, writer’s notebooks, and even a video of a student-teacher conference. You will also gain practical tips and suggestions on how to implement the model in your own classroom. The writing workshop model is based on Dr. Lucy Calkins’ Reading & Writing Project developed at Columbia University.

Shallow-Water Ocean Waves

As ocean surface waves approach shore, they build, become too high for their supporting based, and eventually break to produce surf. Shallow water ocean waves are waves occurring at the sea surface which are affected by the ocean bottom. Shallow water waves are studied because of their impacts on coasts, the economy, recreation, and defense. This Maury Project activity uses the simulated advance of surface waves toward shore to investigate changes in wave characteristics that eventually lead to breakers and surf.

Education in South Korea - The Basics and Current Issues

Most researchers agree that South Korea's spectacular progress in modernization and economic growth since the Korean War is largely attributable to the willingness of individuals to invest a large amount of resources in education: the improvement of "human capital." Like other East Asian countries with a Confucian heritage, South Korea has had a long history of providing formal education, which is viewed as a crucial element for success, and competition is consequently very heated and fierce. This presentation aims to raise questions, such as: how successful this model has been in the last few decades? What are the challenges educators and policy makers are facing today regarding education at all levels?
